About Obesity

Obesity has become a serious epidemic in our country. In fact, a recent newspaper article cited that Arkansas has become the 8th most obese state in the nation! More importantly, obesity is associated with increased risk for:

  • Hypertension
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Heart Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder/Liver Disease
  • Infertility
  • Urinary Stress Incontinence
  • Some cancers (breast, colon, endometrial)

Why Surgery?

Many patients seek help with weight loss through fad diets, pills, and exercise programs. Often they lose some weight, but experience weight regain when the diet is over. Over time, they may even gain more weight back than they lost in the first place. As more time goes by, these patients may develop obesity-related illnesses that make it even more difficult to diet and exercise. For those patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more (about 100 pounds overweight) or those with a BMI between 35 and 40 and one or more obesity-related illnesses, weight loss surgery may be the best choice.

The decision to have weight loss surgery is a big one! It will change your life in a very positive, but often irreversible, way. You will begin to see food in a very different light. You will begin to examine your food behaviors for what they are – responses to emotion or stress. Patients begin to use food to help them live a healthy, active lifestyle. Many patients are able to stop taking some of the medications that are taking to manage their obesity-related illnesses, as they no longer need them. A recent study that included over 22,000 weight loss surgery patients showed that as many as 83.6% achieved a resolution of their Type 2 Diabetes and were able to stop all diabetes medication.

Bariatric Surgery Truths:

  • Only patients considered morbidly obese (having a body mass index greater than 40) or those with debilitating comorbidities are candidates for bariatric surgery.
  • Surgical options are a last resort for morbidly obese patients.
  • Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix; surgery is most effective when paired with lifestyle changes in diet and exercise. Patients are encouraged to deal with emotional and psychological issues that may have contributed to their condition.
  • According to the National Institutes of Health, Bariatric surgery is the only effective therapy for morbid obesity and its complications. A variety of surgical procedures can provide previously full remission of many comorbidities, such as diabetes, asthma, cardiopulmonary failure, infertility and stress incontinence.
  • While complications are possible in any surgery, the rate of complications from surgery performed at an ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® are extremely low – less than one percent.
